charging problems

Post by sodbreaker »

Ok to start out I am bad with wiring. I have a 1968 f250 high boy I put a 1970 f250 camper special sport custom body on. After first swaping bodys the charging system worked as it should and always showed a charge around 14volts on my volt gauge. Did not drive the truck much at that time though due to drive line issues. I've since replaced most of the drive line with newer 1979 f250 4x4 drive line with a 300 l6 with a 1968 points distributer in it 235 four speed with married tcase and high pinon front axle. Since getting the new drive line in I have drove the truck about 2, 000 miles with no charging problems at all. The last several hundred miles some times it will charge and some times not as in going down the road can watch the volt gauge show a good charge for awhile then all of a sudden show discharge with no pattern or anything between boughts of charging. With engine swap put in all new 2gauge battery cables with clean connections have replaced alternator once with autozone replacement. That's what was on the original truck when I started they tested it said was bad gave me a new one. Same deal take this one back they say it still tests good. My main question here I guess is with this being a camper special do they have different wiring than a regular truck? I have two other 1968 trucks both 2wd non camper special and they have totally different wiring set ups for the starter seleniod alternator and regulator. As in this truck has a extra relay box or regulater idk. I was thinking of cutting all the extra wiring out and putting a plain harness in its place from the selenoid forward from a parts truck I have with just one mechanical regulator but have extra wires left over and different colors of wire if I would do that so not sure if that the right thing to do or not. Curious if any one has any ideas or suggestions on what I should do to get a good steady charge. Thanks for reading and any help I may get. I know kind of a long post with spelling problems

I had an intermittent problem with my truck that drove me crazy. Turned out to be a bad ring terminal on the alternator wire to the solenoid. Put a new terminal on it and no more problems.
