IPVR? Circuit Board? Which is broken!?

Post by Russell J »

So here's my circuit board... Or at least the section that counts most.

Image

All the bulbs work. When I test the power coming into the circuit board it reads at 14 V. When I test the wire at the temp sending unit In the engine compartment it only reads 2.3 V.

You can see a section that someone attempted to repair just above the IPVR. When I test one of those solder points, they both read 2.3 V. Before I started messing around with IPVR the volts to the temp sender was only 0.6. I turned that small knob on the IPVR clockwise until it basically bottomed out. Now 2.3 is the best I'm getting. I've tried grounding the gas sending unit wires and the needle does not move. I haven't tried with the temp gauge yet.

My assumption is that either the IPVR, the printed circuit board or both have gone bad. Any suggestions on more troubleshooting or what to replace first?

You any good with a soldering iron? If you are; you can just replace all of those bad traces with actual wire. Carefully cut out the trace, and solder the wire to it.

The IPVR can be found on ebay http://www.ebay.com/sch/Parts-Accessori ... lator+ford If that connector is bad you can use an IPVR from an older truck an solder wire with female spade terminals to the traces on the circuit board.

Okay guys, great news! I plugged in my new IPVR and my temp gauge started working! I grounded the fuel sending unit and the needle went to full! I'm so excited!

Now, I removed the fuel sending unit and found that the metal float has a pinhole in it. I know it works because when I manually move the arm the fuel needle moves along with it. I'm currently draining the gasoline out of the float. Any suggestions on how to repair this pinhole? I'm thinking just a dot of solder will work.

Thoughts?

Best bet would be to buy a new one. The new ones they have now are a solid one piece design and are less prone to holes. The originals are a seemed in the middle this is where most problems occur. Mine had a hole, I bought a new one and the gauge reads accurate now.
