The PO had really messed up the wiring. I can read prints, trace bad wires but I have spent days on trying to figure this one out. I put in a replacement switch for the flashers, because the old one was shorted and melted. I fixed all the bad splices, hot wires hanging from under the dash that I can find.
The front and back flashers flash correctly when you put the turn signal to the intended postion (up or down). When you put the indacator in the middle the back flashers both flash.(I know right). The emgancey flashers work correctly.
If someone can give me any thoughts on this I would truly be greatful. thanks glen

All light circuits that blink go through the turn signal switch. I would look to the switch first and replace it.

Sounds like a bad turn signal switch.
I have had issues with the cheap-o replacements needing their tangs bent to make contact at the right times.
