Can solenoid cause hot start problems?

Post by Kurt Combs »

I have changed literally everything else that could cause this problem, but it persists. New or different: cable to starter and battery ground to block, complete engine (from a 360 to a 460), all wiring including the brown wire to the coil, and battery. I have never heard a vacuum hiss when removing the fuel cap and I added a Duraspark system with the 460, but the problem persists. That leaves the wiring to the primary coil wire from the ignition switch (which is by passed at start up), the ignition switch, the starter solenoid (not sending 12 volts to the coil at start up?), and the wire to the ignition switch. I'm ready to change the solenoid to see what happens.

Mine did this as well as a friends dent. I put a phenolic carb spacer on and only has done it once since and my friend did as well and cured his from doing this.

I rebuilt the Holly yesterday, so I will wait to see if that fixed the problem before doing any other modifications. I previously changed the solenoid and it was not the problem. It could have been the solenoid if the little ribbon wire going to the "I" terminal from the big copper disc was broken, but was fine. (I disassemble the old solenoid) My guess is the replacement solenoid wont last as long as the original. Cheaply made, but "licensed" by Ford. The threads for the nuts that hold the battery cables on were course thread on the replacement and fine on the original, just little differences make me think it is Chinese junk.

Make sure the ground cable from motor to truck frame/body
is tight.
