need some advice on engine parts

Post by 69rangerf100 »

i have a 390 and mentioned in my signature
1. what is the best type of freeze plugs to put in the block.
2. best type of aftermarket stock bore
3. best brand for cam bearings.

that what i can think of for right now about to start the rebuild on the engine.

freeze plugs... get some brass ones from a local auto parts store. the size is 1 48/64 or its 1 49/64 i forget but it is NOT 1.5 like they might tell you at the store.

Clevite cam bearings.
If you are looking for pistons, I would measure the bore first, I can't imagine that you have a used stock bore that is still within spec.

Assuming that you do not own a bore gauge, you willl have to take the block to an engine rebuilder/machine shop. Most stock bore blocks that I've seen have required a .030" overbore.

Measuring cylinder bores is not as easy as purchasing the tool. You have to know what to measure. You need to be able to measure for out-of-round, bore taper, bore diameter as it pertains to each individual piston, etc. I would recommend taking it to someone who does this sort of thing everyday.
For the price of the tool you could pay someone to do it correctly. JMO.
