Temp gauge and sender question

I need to replace my temp gauge. Are all the senders and temp gauges the same 67 - 72 as far as volts, amps and all that other electrical stuff If I am going to replace the gauge I am going to replace the sender, but I need to know if they will interchange with each other.

The only difference I ran into so far is the mounting studs are of different lengths.

AFAIK the only difference in sending units is in the oil pressure switch, between trucks with idiot lights vs. pressure gauges. The temp gauge sending units should all be the same.

But there is a size difference to the male "prong" that sticks out of the water temp sender, but I don't know what years have the different sizes. No big deal really, but my female connector won't stay on without jerry rigging.

There is a difference between the '67-'69 and '70-'72. I went around in circles trying to find one for my '68, the parts stores were all saying they were the same but they're not. Ended up getting one from the friendly Ford dealer C6DZ-10884-B.

So I will need a gauge from a 70 - 72. Now how do I find a gauge that has the long mounting studs (7/8")? Do you know which years they came in? I have a different gauge pod then what was in there, but I am not sure which year it is.

Sorry dcbullet, guess I missed that post. Cool...learn something new every day around here! So what ARE the differences between the two? Different output values or a different-style harness hookup?

Heep: do you mean you have a different instrument cluster than what your truck originally had and you don't know what year it was made? That's covered on the Identifying 1967-1972 Pickups tutorial. Are you looking for a new gauge or a good used one? I've got a couple instrument panels that have broken bezels and would be good only as parts units, I can pull a gauge from one of them if that'll work for you.

If I had to guess I think the output values must not be different. I put a 192 degree thermastat in and it runs just barely into the thick part of the guage. When sitting at lights, it will move just a bit to the right. I don't have a shroud. From what I've read, that seems to be how it should be running.

It is a 71-72, the plastic housing. Yea, if you have an extra one that works that has the 7/8" long mounting studs I will take it. Alls i am worried about is if it works and has the right stud length. Thanks

I'll pull a temp gauge out and measure it for you. Give me a couple days to get that done, and I'll let you know.
