302 Fuel Pump

Post by bjde0b »

So I haven't ran my engine for a couple years. The last time it ran fuel was spraying everywhere from the mechanical fuel pump. The engine is a 302 and the fuel pump does not have the filter body on it.

I have found multiple replacement mechanical fuel pumps. In DC http://www.dennis-carpenter.com/pdf/67-79_2008.pdf the picture shown is the same as what I had previously installed. Is that fine or should I get the one with the filter. I have an inline filter after the pump to the carburetor. I like the clear glass kind so I can see the fuel moving and know how the filter looks.

i haven't seem filter fuel pumps on a stock small block engine. on my fe fuel pump with the filter i use a ffilter before the pump and after the pump. as well as the filter inside the pump. i have had stuff come in through my pump and pop the one way valves out of it. and ruin the pump. i don't trust the in pump filters to do thier job like that. i perfer to have them otu of the pump to make sure its getting filtered before it enters the pump.

I use in pump and after pump. But right 302s do not get filtered pumps in 1971 by the book but none I ever worked on had it either. That was reserved for hard working truck engines (Ford says so) They did not consider a 302 as a work engine but a cruise to the store engine in a truck due to the lack of torque. They call out 240/300/360/361/390/391 and so on for filter on pumps.

PS  all Ford mechanical pumps in 1971 are made by Carter.

None of my 302's ever had a cannister filter attached to it.
They always had the filter inline, (between the pump & carb).
Or the newer 2B carbs which had the "built-in" filter where the fuel line attaches to the carb.

It was changed out, I checked with Ford (factory) and they say due to the fact that in cars the 302 did not have enough clearance they did not get canister pumps. Since the 302 was built on the Windsor car line and then shipped to the truck plants all 302s were built using the car pump.

My 67 Super Stock 390 Fast Back had a no canister pump to save 1/2 of a pound.
