loading up and flooding on a 300 six

Post by mikeconner1 »

OK Ford people, got a question fer ya. Had a buddy come by with an 86 e150 van. 300 six carb, auto trans. He had replaced all the tune up stuff, most of the cooling system, and the carb with a new reman. He's chasing what appears to be a fuel problem, as it will run as though very rich with a lot of black smoke from the exhaust, and seems to be burning a lot of gas for a 300 six. It will also flood pretty easily from a cold start, if driven a short distance then shut off for a short time then restarted, sort of a hot soak condition. Where should we start looking? I could write a very big book about what I don't know about carbs.

flooding and loading up means the float or needle valve isnt working properly. the float could have a hole in it there could be dirt in the needle valve. thats about my limit on carbs too. the first questions you always get on newer stuff when you go inot the parts stores now days is; is the check engine light on?

If the float or the needle valve & seat are the problem, I suppose its time to go back to the parts store then, the carb is brand new reman out of the box, should not be doing that. These things come with factory presets on float level & such in my experience, should be a bolt on replacement, but who knows how far the parts picker dropped this one then kicked it across the floor on the way to the front counter?

I think I'll tell him to get another one, and then help him out with an install (these things ain't no fun to put on, especially outside in the freezing a** cold) and see what we get. I'll be in touch.

Carb came from Bumper to Bumper. I should know better, got an '86 Celebrity wagon with the 2.8 that I installed 5 "new" remans on from Advance Auto before I got one worth a durn.
