67 F-100 engine question

Post by oddball4x4 »

Im trying to figure out what engine is in my 67 F-100 I recently bought. It has a 4 barrel intake with the intake manifold part number being C2AE-9425-C. From the quick search that I did the only thing I came up with is model year 1962 fullsize car (Gallaxy?). I think it might be a 390 but Im not sure. Is the only way to tell to measure the bore and stroke, or is there another way. Sorry for the newbie question but Im trying to learn a little bit

You could try reading your door tag and finding it out from there

http://www.fordification.com/data-1967.htm

If its the factory engine it would probally be the 352? cause I odnt think the 360 or 390 came in that year.

Otherwise IF its a 360/390 I think the only way/best way is to check stroke

The door tag says it came with the 300, Im pretty sure its not a 352 unless the owner put a four barrel intake on it. Thank you for the link Ill check it out

Yes, it is the only way to determine the stroke for sure.

Once you have determined the stroke, you might be avle to narrow down the possible specs by running all of the casting numbers (heads, block, intake, exhaust..)

^^^^ I am confused... IF he knows he has a 360/390 isnt the bore the same? So fi he gets the stroke he should just know right?

Edit: Found my own answer

FE engine displacements Displacement Bore Stroke
332 4.000 in (101.6 mm) 3.300 in (83.8 mm)
352 4.002 in (101.7 mm) 3.500 in (88.9 mm)
360 4.052 in (102.8 mm) 3.500 in (88.9 mm)
361 4.047 in (102.8 mm) 3.500 in (88.9 mm)
390 4.052 in (102.9 mm) 3.784 in (96.1 mm)
391 4.052 in (102.9 mm) 3.784 in (96.1 mm)
406 4.130 in (104.9 mm) 3.784 in (96.1 mm)
410 4.054 in (103.0 mm) 3.98 in (101.1 mm)
427 4.232 in (107.5 mm) 3.784 in (96.1 mm)
428 4.132 in (105.0 mm) 3.98 in (101.1 mm)

352s came with 4 barrels. Police interceptor 352s in 58 had a 4V and Machined combustion Chamber heads. In a Galaxy the manifold was a medium riser. If it was from a T-bird it would have been a low riser.

My 352 did not come with a 4 barrel. Mine also has 352 stamped on the right front part of the block as well as inside the block under the intake. I don't know if other FE blocks where stamped with their size :?

THat 352 stamp doesnt mean its a 352... I think its was stamped on all sizes of FE's
fordification.com wrote:The "352" casting appears on the outside of many (if not most) FE engine blocks on the rear of the block (behind the flywheel), with no regard to the real displacement. So a "352" block could really be a 332, 352, 390, 410, etc.. Measuring bore and stroke is the best way to confirm the actual engine displacement.

Many early FEs ahd 352 and later engine had a backwards 105. The numbers were cast in mirrored fashion.

Truck FEs were 2Vs. There was a few with factory 4Vs in 74-75.

The trouble with these old motors is that you never really know who or when they've been torn-down and built. The best way I know of is to actually look at the crankshaft stamp. I find it more reassuring than trying to measure the stroke of an assembled motor. This will involve a bit of work, but it will be definitive. You'll need to drop the oil pan (I know - not fun) and look on the crank counter-weight. There should be a stamp on the third counter-wieght from the front (on the flat part of the casting). All 2T stamps are 360 cranks and the 3U stamps are 390 cranks. There are probably other variations, but my last few cranks followed that rule. I'm sure you can find a cross reference on the internet somewhere. Hey you never know - maybe you'll find that instead of a cast crank, you really have a forged crank...

Truck 352s never had 4Vs nor did the 292-272 or 360-390 truck motors until the last 2 years as stated above as it was easier to keep them smog tuned with 4V an people were demanding more power as the 460 started going into trucks.

when you said 4 barrel above, I thought you where talking about the carb. My fault.

I think you may be confused. There never was a 352 Police Interceptor in any year, the first Police Interceptor was a 390 in 1961. In 1958 all Ford FE engines were called Interceptors as that was the marketing term and it was not until 61 that they tied that name with the Police name. Also, Galaxies were not medium riser and Tbirds were not low riser. Both of those terms relate to 427 cylinder head design and not to 352 or 390's. The Tbirds and Galaxies actually used the same intake manifolds but the Galaxie used a flat carb spacer and the Tbird used an angled one. The only FE intake manifold that was Galaxie versus Tbird specific was the 62/3 M code Tbird intake and you can't use any Galaxie multi carb intakes on a Tbird due to hood clearance. Hawkrod

Here is a basic Ford Fe engine breakdown (although it needs some work still if you are a Wiki person and want to provide documentation and citations!):

1958 Ford engine brochure (note, even the 332 was called an Interceptor and machined combustion chambers was the only way they made them at the begining of the year but mid year cast chambers replaced machined chambers. Also note that except for Tbirds and Fairlanes with Tbird Special engines, the FE's in 58 were solid lifter with adjustable rockers!):
