Heater Core

Post by 1970FordTK »

Before I have to become inventive and have to design stuff to work with a heater core w/o AC. I'd like to know if anyone has an idea where to find a Heater Core for the AC factory units. :?

I went the partsamerica.com rout, they are out of stock and have no idea when they will get them. I have one last specialty shop I'm going to check, they have been able to find stuff most others haven't. fordman, I have factory A/C so it has to be the with A/C one. 1971ford, thanks for the offer. But as much as a pain as it was to get out of the A/C box unit, I never want to have to do this job again. Several places list it, but no one has it in stock or knows when they will get it. To give you an idea, I have ordered three of these online, partsamerica sent me the wrong core in the right box. That was fun to work with on the return, trust me. And of course they now tell me its out of stock and no idea when it will be in. Other places waited a week to tell me they where out of stock and had no idea when they could get it. Thanks for all the listings so far folks, all help is appreciated. As you can tell its just slieghtly frustrating. :hw:

Thanks for the offer, the frustrating thing is I can find the without A/C one all over. And its not out of my range of ability to make one work with it. Its really the frist time so far that finding a "normal" Ford item that is listed places aint there. Guess thats one thing I'm going to have to get use to working with a bump. Like I said earlier I have one specialty shop left to contact, being that a couple of the guys there are friends ( wich I hate to impose on) is the reason I go there last. I'll be hitting that place this weekend, if its still made and can be found they will find it. I was just hopping that I was being like a horse with blinders on and it was easier to find than I thought. Once again thanks folks.

ok so dumb question then - where can I get a heater core for a truck WITHOUT A/C? I know you guys are saying they're common, can I still get them at a local parts store (Napa, Advance, etc?).

EDIT: I just found that Advance still carries it. Woohoo I can put heat back in my truck!

There's a guy on ebay that stocks the regular w/o A/C type.
Around $25-$30 for a new one.
I would guess that the cores for A/C equipped units would be rather rare as most folks back in the day chose not to opt for A/C.
you could probably have yours checked out, rodded and refurbed at a radiator shop for the cost of a new one.

Wish I could kaptn, all the metal on it is so brittle that every time its moved or touched part of it falls off. If I didn't know better I'd say it was flowing acid or salt water the way its eat up. Thanks for the ideas, I'm sure some folks are benefiting in a positive way from my search. I'm beinging to think your right though kaptn, rare thing in deed on a bump. :hn:

Wow 1970FordTK...

I've never seen a core that did that...
they usually just turn green with deposits from leaks, or get clogged up with crude...
Maybe you could find another A/C unit at a yard or on ebay with a decent one....
I'd check craigslist too...
they come up on there fairly often (at least on the Seattle one)
Another option would be to temporarily install a regular (non-A/C heat box)
But that would be kinda a pain and defeat the purpose.

Good luck with that man...

Thanks kaptn, as mechanical engineer its not beyond my capability to make square peg fit into round whole. But yea, in all the time I've been working with autos and tractors I've personally never seen one in that bad of shape myself before this. And like I said, with all the companies that list and say they carry it. I would think one of them would have had it laying around to find me. Between the cutoff wheel and the saw's all and some left over boat fiberglass, a redneck's got enough to McG man anything. :D Of course it would have just been nice to have just got one and put it in. But if thats all we did with out bumps, this would be a chevy site. OOOO.....did I say that outloud.

if your going to try and make one work the easiest way to do it is to just change out the tubes for the heater hoses. that is all the difference there is between the two cores. its the shape and direction of the tubes. just reuse your old tubes on the new core. just solder them in.
