I have just acquired my first Ford Truck -- at 1969 F100 with a 360CID engine and three on the column. It smells just like (and often sounds rather like) my first car -- a 1968 Mustang. Sweet memories!

I look forward to getting acquainted with it -- and y'all -- better. And to learning helpful lessons with those of you with more experience.

Curiosity question... What kind of mileage do you get from your 240? My 360 may prove on the edge of 'worth it' in terms of rehabilitating -- it runs, but not well at the moment. If it becomes evident that it needs any major repairs, I'd been considering the possibility to subbing in an L-6 engine (240 or 300) for it -- both for the sake of a renewed life-span, and the hope of something noticeably better than the 10 mpg I got with it on my fairly lengthy trip home... Just looking for insights as I ponder that option.

Curiosity question... What kind of mileage do you get from your 240?

When I first got the truck (over 4 years ago) I was getting around 15 Mpg's. Recently my fuel pump went bad, and it seems to use a bit more fuel, so I think I'm closer to 13.
When I was growing up my dad drove his 1970 daily for 10 years in the 90s. His truck has the 360/4 spd combination. I asked him before, he said he usually got 8 mpg's until he put a leather tonneau cover on it, that brought him up to 10 mpg's. But I believe that's the best he's ever gotten. Granted, I know there's certain carb/gearing/tire combos where you can get 12-13 mpg's with a 360, but it is not a common thing.
It is very common for the 240s/300s to get 12 mpg's and higher.

They're certainly not engines built for speed or quick take offs, but they keep the truck on the road. On top of that, its an engine that is nearly bulletproof, and is very easy to work on.

Welcome, nice looking truck. I had a '72 360 4spd and it was no mileage king, but my 300 six isn't either. The 300 is just hdman90's 240 with a longer stroke and lower compression. I might be getting 13 mpg down hill with a tail wind and the clutch in but that might be a bit optimistic .

I will be installing an overdrive that should be a bolt in for our trucks at some point later this year once I get a pair of 78 or newer Bronco buckets and bolt down console to round out my parts list. I'll post my way along here to advise on how the project goes. Looks very straightforward now but we are going to find out.- Len

from Georgia! Great truck! I had an '81 F150 long bed with a 300 I6. Got around 15mpg at best. But it had (probably) 3.25:1 rear end ratio and 235/75-15 tires. Bought it used with 160k on the clock and put another 100k on it before I sold it for what I paid for it, $750. . I have a friend with a '79 dent side with a 300 I6. Bought it new in '79 and he's pushing 500k miles on it. Says it just started using a little oil since last oil change. Still no smoke and no more valve noise than she had when new. You can't beat those engines for durability!

For the record my 1968 F250 Hi Boy regularly gets 14-15 mpg with her 300 I6 4-speed. Most of my driving is in the country below 50 mph which may explain the good mileage. The six cylinder motors are quite reliable and very easy to work on.

Chris!! Yes! That's another thing I noticed! Ever since I started my job where my daily commute requires an exit's worth of interstate travel, my gas mileage has suffered!
P.S. Everytime I see those yellow spark plug wires, I think of you! I hope all is well with you and your truck!
