I just miss the idea of the staples, like we would all have that size of stapler??? I think your idea is what is probably done to get the original look but if it is too much of a pain look out ss screws!

Ditto. I made mine and took some pics in my build thread. 1/16" drill bit if I remember and bend the staples with pliers. Only a little blood lost and they looked factory.DuckRyder wrote:The original seals were stapled... I just matched the placement in my old inner fenders on the new ones, drilled holes about the size of the legs on the staples and folded the staples over... don’t know if it would pass concours but it looks close...

Re: 1968 Mercury 250 Camper Special
Well it went pretty good until I realized that LMC sent me two for the drivers side seals???? They came in a package so I'm guess that this has been wrong for a while. Project stalls unless I can make the passenger side from the wrong drivers side.
You can see by the last pic this side isn't even close to fitting. If I cut it up and over lap a bit it may work, need to check and see if I have the old one in my parts?
Using Ranchero50's idea of drilling out the old staple holes worked great, then I just used two ball pen hammers and folded over the ends of the staples. You can see by the last pic this side isn't even close to fitting. Bummer about the seal being miss packaged. I thought those things only happened to me. Like the others said; I myself have had problems with LMC but they have also corrected the problems for me. But with Dennis Carpenter most of the parts seem to be just a little better quality.

Re: 1968 Mercury 250 Camper Special
I buy my stuff thru Uptowncruisers, as he has a postal box states side and drives down to get them at the same cost as parts catalog pricing. He must get better pricing because of volume to do this but no brokerage fee which is nice for us Canadians. Anyhow he is taking care of this for me but may take a few weeks especially over Christmas, so now on to replacing the radius arm bushings. I don't like bouncing all over the place doing these projects but not much choice when you don't get the right parts!

Re: 1968 Mercury 250 Camper Special
Went and mounted drivers side inner fender to get some stuff out of the way and mounted the hinge and windshield water bottle with pump. Interesting trying to thread inside filter with lock nut for pump on as it is plastic and on an angle. What I did eventually was use a piece of hose that was snug on the filter to hold it, then threaded the pump on worked well.

Looking good couldn't imagine the parts mayhem you have to go thru to get her put back together.

Re: 1968 Mercury 250 Camper Special
I think that it is kind of par for the course when you don't disassemble the vehicle. Everyone has their way of doing things and in my case there was no way of knowing what to expect. As for wrong parts, yeah that does happen, I'm sure not on purpose. Hunting for missing parts is where you get to meet new people and that is a big plus to me.
All in all I like the process and the results even on this truck as I have had to go back and redo some stuff so its right to me anyhow. My latest deal has been getting all the right bolts in their proper places, the PO even bought new fender bolts but they aren't original style so I'm at the wire wheel a lot these days cleaning original bolts in getting ready for mounting the fenders.
My biggest enjoyment in doing these restorations is the cleaning, making new or getting something to operate just right along with the learning process of how to do new things.
I know it sounds weird but that is why I do these restorations, the driving and owning them is secondary to me. I will have the truck up for sale once it's done in the spring....already starting to look for another.

Re: 1968 Mercury 250 Camper Special
Well LMC is saying that the seal pieces are the same for both sides of the inner aprons? It's apparent that they don't check their pieces. I sent them pics of how far off the piece is for the right side, not holding my breath that they will change their minds though!
Have a look and tell me what you think! The seal is at the start and finish points on the apron. This is the other side, fits good!

These are the templates I made from my originals to cut out the material I found. Definitely two different designs.

Jamie I will will use your pic to clue those guys in awesome thanks! I went looking in your build to see if you had something as I remembered you had said they were different before I started doing mine.
hdman90 thanks but really just jumping all over the place trying to stay busy with the parts I have. I do feel it is going in the right direction...I think
