The goal is a daily in town driver with mild off-road camping with the family and dragging the 28’ Avion out to local campgrounds.

Towing a trailer may be easier with the auto. It will take sometime to get the parts needed for that swap. You want to look for a 1973 to 1976 F250 4x4 that has a auto in it.

Re: 72 F250 4x4 Restoration
What do you guys do with old parts? I would assume “scraps” can be sold to salvage, but what about the bigger stuff like the engine and transmission?
Guess the bigger question is if there’s a good way to sell anything to help with the cost of things that I want to buy? Other than Craig’s list and parting things out slowly.

You have to get them under 200kb in size then you will be ok.

Re: 72 F250 4x4 Restoration
OK!!!! It’s update time
I just got a phone call from the machine shop. I had a block from the truck that I took out back in the day, had it bored and just needed it cleaned up. . . . . .turns out the block had a crack in it. So that idea is toast.
Good news is that I think it has redirected me to get the front and rear end rebuilt.
So yeah. . . . .off I go on that.
Here’s the site that I fond that has a good breakdown on front and rear end parts all pulled together for rebuilds - any thoughts or experience - the last time this thing rolled on it’s own, it was in a flood. . . .so I’m thinking I need to plan on a full rebuild and hope that the gears aren’t pitted.
Thoughts?

Re: 72 F250 4x4 Restoration
So yeasterday I connected with a mobile mechanic to partner with as an advisor.
I’m in that gray area between being a pro Mechanic and a YouTube Warrior. I used to work in a 4x4 shop for a a couple years, so I’m comfortable, but that was 20 years back and I don’t want to screw up something important. . . .or waste time trying to bang on something that needs a press.
Anyhow, the plan is to go through all the fluids in the drive train that has been sitting for 20 years and get an idea if anything needs to be replaced or rebuilt right off. I had an original plan to yank everything and start fresh from the ground up. . . . But frankly I’m sick of waiting for the $$$ fairies to fill my pillows up each night.
The current drive train has the manual tranny that we are swapping out for the auto C6 from the 71 2x and the Dana 24 transfer case with the 44 and 60 differentials. I’ll let you know what we find.

Re: 72 F250 4x4 Restoration
Looks like a lot of fun. What I'd do and heartily recommend is getting it moving under it's own power with the minimum amount of effort. That way you can see what needs sorted out and also see what you want to change.
I'm not highboy informed but power brakes and steering is going to be a PITA. Body should swap over pretty easily once it's stripped. I'd even consider keeping the highboy body together while sorting out the drive train and get the bodywork done on the donor. Then swap the good body onto the good frame.
Most failed projects fall apart once the truck is in a million pieces.
