buying a speedo/odometer

Post by takehikes »

gave up trying to find odometer gears so now I found a 68 and a 70 in a junk yard not far from here. I think I'll go pull the better looking of the speedos out. Question is how can I field test them to see if they work? Anyway to take a battery operated drill and make them spin to be sure they work? Or something like that?

Ok I can use a drill but I'd need the end of a cable chucked up in it to turn it.....or what else can I use? Ideas?

There are square screw driver bits
Home Depot , Lowes, Menards or a local lumber yard have them.

There are different sizes.
or you could make one out of an old cable.

I'm sure you could find a speedometer cable to use at the junkyard. Your thinking too hard.

Also, if the truck is an old U-Haul, there is a lock on the speedometer cable that prevents you from disconnecting it. I guess that was a thing back then.

Get the cluster from the 68. The 70 cluster is a one year only cluster. If after only the speedometer. I think you can use your finger to spin it. If not a small phillips sould fit in there fine too. If swapping entire clusters. Make sure the they are both exactly the same. Idiot lights or all gauges. The two clusters are different
