How did you finish the rear of the cab inside?

Post by FFRKing »

I'm looking for ideas and materials of how to finish the rear of the cab after removing the gas tank and installing bucket seats.
I will probably build a panel and cover it with vinyl with some speaker boxes in the corners.
For those that have done it, what did you make the panel from and how did you attach it? The bracket that the gas tank attached to sticks out a little further than the rear panel below the window. I can build about anything but would like to keep it simple and look finished.
Pictures would be great if you have them.

Thanks

Chris

Chris,

I used 1/2" plywood and carpeted it. I made a 3 sided box to cover the bottom (sorry no fab pics of this), and then 2 side pieces that hold the speakers and the back piece.

The side pieces I left one corner a little long and it just jammed up into the cab and then I had a L brackets and screwed into the lower box. The back I put a couple straight brackets that pressed in behind the lower box and used black drywall screws and screwed into the back of the cab carefully into the areas where it is the internal metal only. I did put LED's in the side pieces that come on with the dome lights as well. If you look close can see the line from the back piece and the lower box.

Turned out great. My seat belts mounting bolts do go through the lower box as well.

Good luck

Steve

Steve,

Thanks for the pictures. It looks great.

In the finished picture, it looks like 1/4" bolts across the top where the gas tank bolted in. I assume this is where the back piece is anchored in. I was hoping to cover this area but with it painted up, it doesn't stand out like I thought it might.

I'm probably overthinking this, as usual.

Thanks again,

Chris

very nice! I was wondering how Ford finsihed the cab off when the truck came from the factory with bucket seats and the gas tank was still in there. Carpet? Paint????

Ford used carpet and a special set of stainless trim to cover the tank with bucket seats.

I know about the special trim, but cannot find any pictures of it or any for sale.

Anybody know where there is some? I did email a member on here from a post from 2 years ago, but haven't heard back. He must have moved on to other toys.

Thanks again,

I would be interested in a "how to" description of how to do the special trim / carpet for the in-cab tank as well. I'm ordering some carpet later this winter, and can order extra carpeting to finish off the tank and firewall.

I've been looking at the 1984-1996 F150 XLT for "idears". Ford did some nice stuff with that.

I've not seen it installed, but Roddoors does interior trims for the Ford F series.
