Starter relay problems?

Post by Metivier21 »

I will try to explain this the best I can, it's been a frustrating few days. Just trying to give the back story as maybe someone might tell me what I did wrong.

I replaced the starter relay (with s63p) after the engine continued to run with the key in the off position. When I did, the new relay was stuck in the on position cause the engine to crank. So I returned it for a new one. The new one seemed to work good while starting the engine but would die as soon as I turned the key to run. The only way the engine would run is if the starter was engaged (only did this very breifly).

After messing with the relay for a bit, I found it would run if I disconnected the wire from the I post. It would run very rough(it would idle but it was sputtering). I then thought I may have an issue with the ignition switch, so that was replaced with no change in the situation.

Since then I have found that power is coming from the I post on the relay at all times and wires get hot when connected (I don't believe that is suppose to happen). I thought the I terminal only give power the the ignition coil while starting. If so, I thought the truck should be running fine with it disconnected, but it's not.

I am not sure we're to turn next. Should I find a new model relay, did I damage some wires leading to the ignition coil or ignition switch. I looked at the points and rotor and they appeared to be fine. Truck was running fine before I replaced the relay.

Wow!!!!

"I replaced the starter relay (with s63p) after the engine continued to run with the key in the off position". First off, I don't believe this was caused by a faulty Starter relay.

You stumped when you said you replaced the ignition switch and there was no change in problem as that is what I would have also replaced. There must be a wiring issue going on.... which can be a pain to trace down.

Sorry can't help.

I purchased another model relay and everything is back to normal. Not sure what was up with the two s63p's, maybe both bad? I would not think a relay would cause the motor to run bad, unless I'm missing something, but everything is running like it did before.

One problem fixed, now to deal with first gear grinding.

Starter solenoid's are notorious for being bad right out of the box. I've bought 3 before getting a good one. Congrats on the fix!
