1971 Ranger XLT 390 Wont stay running
I have compression fuel and spark. Truck wont start unless I back off the timing and then readvance it right after startup so it will run.

Re: 1971 Ranger XLT 390 Wont stay running
Found my old log in so I'll try it this way considering there has not been any response the the op.
I have a 71 With a 390 in it. The engine is a reman from Discount Engines in Mesa Arizona (who I do NOT recommend). I put an Eccel point eliminator in it, a Super Stack coil, a new 2100 carb and new distributor, in fact most everything is new. I even removed and replaced the resistor wire with regular 14 guage. The truck starts only if I retard the timing and runs only if I advance it right after start-up. The compression ranges from 155 to 170. I checked the vacuum advance and it's okay. This beast has me puzzled! Update: I replaced the Accel with a BWD point eliminator. Pulled the timing cover and checked the gears and chain, they're okay pointing correctly with very little slack (8th inch or so)

Chevy has left me stuck far from home, Ford has never failed, they've always brought me home.

When you say it needs the ignition retarded to start, does it just not fire or is it kicking back against the starter?

It's not kicking. I need to move the dizzy to about TDC or 5* ATDC to get it started then hurry up and advance it to about 12* BTDC for it to run

For future reference... I pulled the dizzy and backed it up one tooth, replaced the carb with a rebuilt 2100 and replaced the vacuum advance with a single port. The trucks runs great with timing set to 12* TDC. Thank you for your help
