Repo fenders

Post by Kraig »

I was wondering if the reproduction fenders fit worth a darn or is it worth the trouble to buy the patch panels and repair the lower portion of the fender? Do the patch panels fit well? Also I see MAC sells fender halves (front half and back half) has anyone used these and do they include the brace welded to the fender? Thanks I just don't want to have a recurring problem...once is enough :D

From what I understand, the reproduction fenders are of a lighter-gauge steel than the factory versions...meaning they're thinner and dent easier. If you (or someone you know) can do a good patch job, I think you'd be happier fixing your originals. As for the fit of the patch panels, they have the correct contours, but they'll fit only as good as the person welding them in. ;)

Rustfree OEM used fenders come through E-bay all the time, might be worth it to keep an eye peeled there.

Welding is not a problem. The shipping on buying a used fender is kinda pricey isn't it? Don't they get shipped motor freight?

Actually, since UPS reconfigured their size/weight requirements, something like a fender can be handled by them. A fender isn't that heavy or large. It'll be a lot more reasonable than you think. (In fact, without checking right now, I think it would even still be a lot less than buying a repop fender.)

A lot of people have found that shipping them by bus (like Greyhound) is a lot less expensive than by truck. A few months ago I was quoted $50-$60 to get a pair of doors shipped from California to Nebraska by bus.

I would not fix your old fenders because by the time you buy the patch panels and get them welded on,bodywork done the cost will be more than a good used set and freight.I have bought nos ford fenders on Ebay as well as a couple of sets of good used ones from a guy in Oregon and the freight was about $30.00-$40.00 US a fender. The guy from Oregon sells very good quality used fenders and you can get them sometimes for about $40.00 US.I have shipped them all UPS with no problems.
