Front Turn Signals

Post by RavenBlack67 »

Sorry to beat a dead horse I just wanted to check with some people with experience before I throw another part at this truck. I am working on a 1967 F100 2wd with a 3 on the tree manual. I can not get the front turn blinkers to work. I put in a new dimmer switch which got the front headlights back on, new light bulbs (dual filament) which got the parking lights working, and I tried a new flasher relay which didn't change anything. The rear turn signals work fine. The front do nothing. I have a spot in the glove box for the hazard switch but the wires and switch are MIA. I also have this unique piece of electrical engineering under the dash.

I wanted to ask if my turn signal problem is going to be the turn signal switch? I have read other posts that this solved a problem with no turn blinkers or only one side of the vehicle was working. I haven't found someone with just the front blinkers not working is why I asked. Thanks for the help.

If you haven't already, I Would check Voltage to a good ground, If you Have Voltage then you have a bad Ground it the Socket or Harness.

On the turn signal housings, both, there should be a ground wire. With grille installed it's a pain to get to. Remove grille, add a ground from each turn signal housing. If you already have them, remove and clean to bare metal. Most over-looked ground on these trucks.

I did see that there were ground wires attached to the parking/turn signals when I replaced a headlight. They will definitely be a pain to get at but I should be able to clean that up in a week or two and see if that gives me blinkers. The lights do work as parking lights, a bad ground would kill only the blinking function?

That the parking lamps function would be a decent indicator that the grounds are functioning. Otherwise the turns on the rear would light up as the power seeks ground through those elements. I never messed with the signal controls enough to give good advice but I'd suspect that the missing hazard switch is a good place to start. I did notice on my '71 that when I spliced into the brake circuit to feed my cargo lamps / HMSL LED's 2nd element that the hazards make it flash as well. I'd suspect that the hazard switch is in circuit before the brake lamps which I think are before the turn signal switch. I'm probably wrong though... :hmm:

I've got an idea to test the tss vs a bad ground. The rear lights work so what if I switch wires 282 & 283 for wires 2 & 3 on the plug? If that makes the front work then I've got a switch problem. If it doesn't then I get to take the grill off and clean up my grounds. Bad idea?

I think that's a bad idea. Looking at the above referenced schematic, the 2 and 3 at the turn signal switch have piggybacks, 2a and 3a that are fed from the hazard switch. This makes me think the switch being missing isn't a big deal for the turns signals to work.

I see the piggyback to the hazard flashers on the diagram. I should probably take the time to hunt down 2a and 3a and wire up my hazard switch. I've decided to replace the tss anyhow because it is worn out. I have to find the sweet spot in the middle to turn them off. After that I'll probably have to pull the grill and clean up those grounds. There's no getting off with doing things the easy way. Better to do it right.

Sometimes the contacts in the switches (column or dash) get a little corrosion. I temporarily "fixed" mine by quickly push/pulling the dash switch several times and they worked again.

I replaced the tss and the flasher and I have all of my lights working. Thanks for the help everyone. Now over to the brake forum.
