ignition switch ground wire

Post by hillcountryflt »

On my 71, there is a black wire coming off the back of the ignition switch. It has simply been cut. Do all I need to with it is ground it to the frame?
Apparently it is not impacting the truck any, because it has been disconnected for as long as I have owned it.

Owned my 71' for some 10 years and never had the ignition switch grounded. Honestly never heard of it needing to be.
Does it show it on the wiring diagram here, (that I can't seem to locate anymore)?

Black is color coded as 57 or 950 and I can't find a reference to either on the master wiring diagram for the ignition switch.
Question - are the ignition switches on the 69 the same as the 71? I a pretty good wiring setup out of a 68/69 f100 and would like to use it to support a f600 wiring cluster.

The switches should have the same terminals on the 69 as well as the 71 I believe. Not sure why you'd want to change the harness though to install an F-600 cluster, (factory volt/amp gage)? Look at my dash pics and you'll see the F-600 is a "drop in" with simple wiring to get it working.

Regarding the f600 swap on the 71, the plug for the cluster is a plug type for the 68-69 f100/f600 while the plug for the cluster is a printed circuit board type of thing for the 71.
It appears you cut off your 71 style connector and spliced in a 68/69 type of cluster connector, correct? That would work, but the rest of my wiring harness it pretty botched up and I have a pretty good 68/69 style.

Yes I found it easier to graft in the F-600 panel wiring into the existing 71' harness.
There's a couple of little "hick-ups" you have to pay attention to there to do so also:

Ditto, color's stayed the same but verify on the wiring diagrams from the main page of this site. Also, somewhere around '68-69 the ignition went from round pins to flat spade pins. Spades handle more current.
