I was thinking the same thing...run the motor without the clutch and trans and see what it sounds like. First check the flywheel bolts...
I already checked the flywheel bolts.

The problem is that the engine does not make the noise unless it is under a load....without being out on the road its virutally impossible to tell if the noise is there or not.

Spent the weekend doing chores around the house, organizing some stuff and recycling a ton of stuff. Even did a couple of house projects....I know what???

In cleaning up I decided I finally needed to get rid of this stuff and build the seat I have wanted since we pulled the seat from the truck, it is in immaculate condition.

Here is the Grille Narrowed up 8" to match the width of the bench.

Image

Got the frame all built for the seat and getting the fit better on the height of the seat as a sofa and the fronted fit up where it needs to go.

Image

Here is the somewhat finished product. I need to make a top cap for the frontend, I dont like how unfinished it is and I still need to find a couple of bezels for it. Anyone have a couple they want to get rid of, white and beat up is totally cool with me.

I raised the grille up off the floor a fair bit. Bench might be a little bit tall for some but its about perfect for me.

Image

Image

Armrests turned out cool for just some flat stock welded up and capped the 1" square tube.

Image

If I had more room I would just keep it in the shop. Its going to our new office we are moving into at the end of next month.

I am going to clear the entire thing and see how many bad looks I get at the shop =)

I think what really has me flummoxed is the damage to the sprung hub. Were the drive-line vibrations bad enough to do that in 10 miles or so? It appears to have been subjected to an inordinate amount of abuse in a very short period of time - I mean you've hardly driven it!

These things do not live kind lives in the hands of your average 5.0 mustang driver... Seems like they should be set up to take quite a pounding.

Good luck on the troubleshooting. At least you have a rad bench to sit and ponder life on now!

Thank you for the compliments guys.

It was not the clutch...

But I will at least update my thread so it doesnt just die like most other build threads.

Boxes of goodies showed up

Image

This stuff is beefy and really nice quality.

Image

Image

Lightened steel flywheel and all ARP Fasteners.... Looks sexy. Again more cool **** on the truck that you will never, ever see.

Image

First pass at some non tacky underdash lighting. I also have a soft start, delay and soft shut off for the lighting, its pretty cool in my opinion.

They will not be this bright, this is on 18 volts..

Image

Picked this stuff up from the upholster yesterday. Not exactly what I had in mind but it will work. The color is a little more purple in person but it looks pretty cool Carpet is totally the wrong color. Interior looks very european, exactly what I was shooting for.

Image

Started it up tonight, same noise. It almost sounds a little quieter but that could just be that there is an interior and a console in there. Its still there.

I believe at this point for me, I am done with the truck in its current state. I do not feel like pulling the motor and purchasing a new crate engine for the truck and investing another $7,000 in a truck that I already went over budget already, and that still does not guarantee that it is not something in the transmission.

Signing off for a while....Thanks all for following along.

Amazing how four upholstered pieces can transform an interior. They look great! Can you post more pics and a description on that dash? I was also planning something very similar with the double stitch. You confirmed for me that it is the look I want.

Hang in there. You'll find the source of the noise. You have too much craftmenship invested in this truck to just park it.

Awesome work again Hackster.

The new parts look shiny and nice. And well at least we get to see them before they disappear into the engine.

The interior looks sick man. The tone of the seats & stitching really look good together.

I really hope you find some more motivation to finish the truck. Can't just sit back and let it die.

Hope to see some updates in the future. And we'll if you don't want to fiddle with it anytime soon you should still remember you helped a lot of us with this thread. So thanks again man. Good luck.

Hey guys, I agree that I have a lot of work into the truck. I doubt Ill just walk away from it but is definately got the best of me right now.

Took it over to a friends shop today and rolled it on the dyno...not for HP just to listen to it with a load on it and get a fresh set of eyes on it. We could not hear **** on the dyno, its really loud with the truck, the rollers, the fans and stuff so we just took it out and drove around. We figured that its a pretty loud version of the tick I hear at idle.

Image

Image

So we got it up on the rack and ran it. Its coming from something in the motor from what we can tell, the noise is the loudest at the side of the block. Took the opportunity to shoot a couple pics of the underside for the potential parts buyers =)

Image

Image

Its not loud enough to sound like its coming apart and they both said they would just run it. Put some thicker fluid in it and run it.

So I came home, picked up some 5w50 which is what they run in the track pack cars.

Drained the oil when I got home and got a little bit of a suprise.....a whole bunch of metal

Image

It is not a ton of metal, but its metal, and its in the oil, there are some flakes in there that are bigger than just the glitter in the oil.

I wanted an answer, guess I got it.

I wonder what could have gotten hurt during the accident that would cause those problems, time to pull it and drop the pan.

Hate to hear of the issues you are running into so close to the end of the build. You have shared so much great information on this build it would be a shame not to complete it. I hope that you can find out what the issue is and get this truck out on the road. Keep your head up!

Sorry to hear about your engine problems I was going to mention some of the early 5.0s had a problem with the pressure plate bolts causing a tick noise, but your new clutch and such should have taken care of that, and the metal in the oil, have you checked any of the mustang forums I havent heard of many 5.0 problems.

Thanks guys.... I have heard great things about the 5.0 and terrible things about them as well. They are noisy, ticky, rattly on one end of the spectrum but hold up to a ton of power. Not much about bottom ends failing but there was a ton of motors replaced out of warranty from the earlier batches of motors. This is an early motor.

I woke up and said F u truck and got to work like any other project. 2 hours later Engine was bolted on the stand and I was ready to order a crate engine this time.

Image

Image

One interesting thing. There is one good hot spot on the flywheel and pressure plate, I am going to reach out to ACT and see what they say There was no hot spot on the factory stuff.

Ordering a few things and looking for a little more information. If I can get a motor, I should be able to get it installed in an evening with a little bit of help with the front clip.

Screw you Coyote engine....screw you.

Glad to hear ya step up to the plate and nip it in the bud. Been following your build and hope you continue. I have no skill when it comes to some of the things that has been done to your project but watching someone that does have the skill keeps me interested. Keep up the good work. :fr:
