One curious condition

Post by CV1186 »

Ok, I have a problem and it really has me scratching my head. I replaced my missing instrument cluster with a unit I made that has aftermarket instruments. The gauges were wired utilizing the original wiring harness and only adding sending (signal) wires where required. The truck is still in the rebuild process, and I have got to the point where i am installing the rear wiring harness the engine compartment harness is in and the truck has been started so that works fine. Now the problem is that when I hooked up the rear tail/ turn signal harness and depressed the brake pedal to check function the brake lights came on, the weird part is that the instrument lights came on as well and when I let off the pedal the lights went out. The instrument lights are working correctly up to this point they dim with the headlight switch and come on an d turn off by this switch as well. It is the strangest thing. Any ideas would be appreciated. :?

Take a look at this diagram. http://www.fordification.com/tech/wirin ... odel99.jpg In the center you'll see a 6 prong plug. Wire 810 (red w/ black stripe) is the brake light hot, in the center pin on the right. Wires 44,49 and 50 also are in this plug and go directly to the instrument cluster. It's gotta be somewhere in that arena.

If your brake lights aren't grounded properly they will feed back through the tail lights ,which are on the same circut as the dash lights.
check for paint or rust were the lights bolt up and also where the box bolts on. a simple solution is to run a ground wire to the frame from the lights.
Even the socket that holds the bulb must have a good connection.
