Accidentally did something. Need help. Electrical short

Post by svslow »

I was trying to figure out why my right front turn signal wasn't working when I accidentally grounded the hot wire to it. Some smoke came up from the steering colum and now my left rear brake light is acting up. The only thing that works properly on it is the turn signal. I took the whole turn signal switch out of the colum and it's still good no burns or shorts (less than 6 months old). i took the cluster out and inspected all the wires back there and couldn't find anything. I hard wired the brake light from the turn signal to the light itself and it works but is very dim. I don't really know what wires to check and it seems like the light housing itself is the ground. Also the running light doesn't work Either. If I pull the other housing out to prevent it from grounding then both running lights come on but are so dim you can barely tell their on. I have no idea what happened. Any ideas ?

Where there's smoke, there's problems. Even though the TS switch looks good, it sounds like you've smoked (no pun intended) it. The brake lights as well as the turn signals are controlled throught the TS switch. You are having problems with both so it sounds to me like a new TS switch is in your future.
