Radio wiring recommendations

Post by EvanT »

Hey all,

Acquired an aftermarket retro radio and looking to install in a '72 f-250. I am struggling to find the correct wire splice choices as there are two wires coming out of new radio... One (yellow) labeled "Battery" and another wire (red) labeled "Ignition". I have spent some time under the dash as well as looking through the Fordification wiring diagram but believe my truck was a factory radio delete(no antenna and some aftermarket door speakers). Where should I be splicing this in? Any ideas, pics, etc?

The yellow wire is to maintain the radio presets, it should be hot all the time. The red is to supply power to the stereo only when the ignition switch is in the acc/run position. Since original radios had mechanical presets, there won't the equivalent of the yellow wire for the radio in the factory harness. You'll have to tap into the harness somewhere else for the constant hot circuit.

Thanks. Any recommendations on which lead to tap for ignition wire? I don't want to choose some random wire as I am afraid it will drain that circuit without research.

Check out carneyboy91's post in the Interior Forum....titled Aftermarket Radio Installation. He provides the sort of detail you're looking for.
