I am building a engine test stand on a shoe string budget. I'm gona get a duraspark harness from the boneyard. I bought a new painless duraspark harness for my truck and it worked great. But the new harness came with a inline resister and I don't thank the factory ones have this. Do i need the resister inline with the harness?
Thanks buddies

Re: duraspark resister
I'm sorry my response won't be more helpful but...
it depends.
From what i've read online the 'red tab' boxes were higher energy and didn't have a resistor, the blue and yellow tab boxes appear to have the resistor but i cant confirm that. I have been running mine wide open on white, and resisted on red (red to pink from dash cluster)
The main reason for the resistor in points cars was to not melt your coil by feeding it a full 12v wallop of high current. It would probably depend more on what coil you're running than the box itself.
THAT SAID, i did manage to fry my DS box when i swapped my engine by hooking it up wrong. What did i hook up wrong? I dont know, stabbed it in, it was acting weird, swapped box, switched some wires around and it fired up and ran... I think i might have fed 12v into the coil output wire? Not sure...
If you're only running for a little while, you should be fine with out a resistor. I wouldn't waste time trying to find some specific DS harness, just make jumper wires to get it running on the stand.

Re: duraspark resister
I swapped in a Duraspark dizzy and blue grommet box in my truck. Got my power feed from the switched full 12v wire on my ignition switch, bypassing the resistor wire. Never even switched coils and never had a problem.

Re: duraspark resister
Thanks sarge, that is exactly what we needed to know!!
When i rewire my truck i'll be ditching the resistor then.

Re: duraspark resister
I just bought one of those clip on connectors with a male spade on the side. Clipped it around the wire and plugged into it with my ignition wire from the box. Very easy and took minutes.

Found a photo of how and where I tapped into my ignition switch.
