70-72 grilles (questions)

Post by FORDification »

Hey all...I've had my hands on several '70-'72 grilles while parting out trucks for my project, but they've all been sold or disposed of. I'm adding some updates about grilles to the Body Trim and Insignias page and need a few details, since my memory ain't what it used to be.

1) Are the '70 grille inserts interchangeable side-to-side or does each side have it's own part number?

2) Are the '70-'72 grille shells the same or is each year different? If they're different, will the grille inserts interchange throughout this three-year period? (I seem to remember hearing that the '71 and '72 inserts will interchange, but minor modifications need to be made?)

3) Were all headlight doors on ALL the '70-'72 blacked out? I believe they were, but thought I'd better verify that.

I'll be posting the updates later tonight.

1970 ford truck grille inserts
original catalog info was as follows:
before ser#J30,001 R.H. # DOTZ-8150-B L.H. # DOTZ-8151-A
after ser J30,001 R.H. + L.H. # DOTZ-8150-B
------------------above info from JAN/1975 CATALOG INFO------------------
Sometime on or before this printing--JAN/1980 the L.H. insert part number was replaced O.S.I. info DOTZ-8151-A was replaced by DOTZ-8150-B
so as for the inserts 1970 only--- now are the same part number and interchange from either R.H. OR L.H. side
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
as for the grille my catalog lists a 1970 grille as being sold with the inserts so the number printed is for 1970 only
the original 1971 truck grille number again was a complete(with inserts) in my listing and then replaced by individual pieces and this showed the replacment shell only number as D2TZ-8200-A (ALUMINUM) which is the original number listed for a 72 truck f100/350 "shell only" so long story short 71-72 shell the same? I would say 99% yes 1970 the same as 71,72 I would guess yes but haven't found the change yet
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
With a little more research I may find they (the outer grille shells70-72) are all the same? but I will let someone with some actual hands on tell you for sure

Hey, thanks for that info Mark. I've added those tidbits to the updates, and will continue to try to find out also if the grille shells are the same. Let me know if you find anything out.

FWIW

Dennis Carpenter list the 70 and 71-72 shell as differant part numbers.

Oh,

Looking at the grill pics, it looks to me like the 70 might be silver under the headlamps. but the 71-72 painted black to give the illusion that the intake slot is wider.

Assuming they are original?

Good catch....I rechecked and it turns out that of all the '70 pics I have, that's the ONLY one that doesn't have the black paint under the headlight doors. The owner must have cleaned that shell up and never repainted it. I'd better get a different pic to use there on that page.

Looking at a copy of a 70 sales brochure all the headlight doors were blacked out.
I know the shell on a 71 & 72 is the same but, I have never fooled with a 70.

The issue with the 70 vs 71-72 headlight doors would be nice to understand. Are we thinking that it is just a cosmetic thing? I have passed up some 71-72 headlight doors because of the Dennis Carpenter # number. Is anyone able to physically compare the two to verify this?

I guess I've never heard anything about the '70 headlight door being any different from the '71-'72. I'm thinking that if the grille shell is the same, than the headlight doors have to be the same. And that's how I have it listed on the webpage....I suppose if there's anything different about them, we should probably find out and correct it.

This is the Grill SHELL, I didn't look up the doors.

The mounting tabs for the grille inserts are different on '70.
Tabs on '71 and 72 are set back further to accept the thicker grille inserts.

The '70 grille shell is unique, the '71 and '72 are the same. The '70 shell is shallower and for that reason you can't fit the '71 or '72 inserts into a '70 shell. '70 inserts are shallower, not as deep as the '71 and '72 inserts. The '70 - '72 headlight doors are the same, all blacked out, the black-out (raccoon) look started with the '69 Ranger.

ah, THAT'S the info I was looking for to complete that section....thanks Lobuck and Barry. The page will be updated with that info before I call it a night tonight.

The updated page will also have a whole new section I worked on today regarding tailgates and tailgate trim. I have a few questions about those as well, but that's for another thread.
