Speedometer Question

Post by Eric46 »

My truck is a 1970 F-250 4x4 - NP-435, Dana 24 T-Case - with no speedometer reading. I disconnected the speedometer cable from the T-Case and spun it by hand...its good. I pulled the driven gear out of the t-case...it is not plastic, rather it is a metal gear (20 teeth)...and the teeth are worn off. The drive gear appears ok and spins when the driveshaft spins...looking through the hole in the t-case.

I didn't see in the 1970 shop manual where the speedometer cable attaches to the t-case. Were the 67-69 trucks different than the 70?

Any ideas where to find a new driven gear?

Thanks

No.....they are the same for a D-24. You are looking at the correct spot for the transfer case (on the back side of the T-case going to the rear drive shaft).

If the teeth are worn off of it, sounds like it wore out (due to misalignment?)

Yea...I don't think it was turning as one side is ground flat. Any ideas where to get another gear?

The fastest way to get a gear is the local parts store. Then check online vendors for our trucks. As welll as ebay rockauto etc.

Try these guys. I have bought Speedo gears from them after making gear changes in the past.
Their info is very detailed & their gear calculator works well too.
