Electrical boondoggle!!

Post by cluereaper »

I have a '67 F100 SWB, 240/6 with a 3 on the tree. Not sure why or what's happening, but every once in a while my gauges stop working along with all my heat and wiper controls. Marker and headlights still work, but when the rest of it cuts out, so do my turn signals. There is no A/C or radio, literally the most basic truck I've ever seen. The issue is hit or miss and happens in hot or cold, dry or wet weather. I have the truck in for state inspection right now and I'm hoping this is one of the "hit" days. My thought was possibly a new wiring harness altogether, but is there a relay or something that is linked to all these systems? I'm ok with most mechanical stuff, but wiring/electrical issues irk me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for the help!

I'd check my body grounds.

After grounds, check the fuse panel (fire wall side) for corrosion then the ignition switch.

How many keys do you have on your key ring? The wipers on a 67 get power from the ignition switch. I suspect your switch is worn. Wiggle the key next time it happens and see what happens. If you have several keys that can produce weight and make a bad contact in the switch.

Have had this happen to me before. everything cuts out inside, wiggle the key and everything comes back one.

I tried wiggling the key in the ignition, no luck. Going to look at the fuse panel today. Also, all gauges cut out, well, all two of them. Not sure if that simplifies things or not, but hell, it's worth a shot. Thanks for the help so far!
