Composite headlights

Post by 19agin »

I'm interested in some feedback about the replacement composite headlights that can be bought. They are apparently a direct replacement and you can also purchase the new headlight wiring harness to power them. The bulbs appear to be the capsule type that are halogens. Has anyone installed these? And how well do they look/work?
I would like to put these in my '71 so I can see a little better at night, but I don't want to install something that looks like A$$. So, if this is an upgrade you have done, let a brother know.
And...Merry Christmas!

Halogen type sealed beams are pretty bright if you have a good ground.
sometimes rust will build up resistence.
Try a jumper wire from the ground to the neg battery post and see if that makes a difference.

I just installed these KC lights today. The hole in the back of the headlight bucket does have to be made a little bigger, but is a good upgrade. I make my own harness, that by its self will make a big difference.

Here's the diagram if ya wanna wire up your own headlight relay system. Otherwise, LMC's $30 harness is a decent value.

Thank you for the replies and the pictures. That is a nice looking truck you are building. I figure for no more than it costs for the headlights and harness, it would be a pretty good upgrade.

Have you wired in the LMC harness yet? How did you route it?

I purchased the LMC headlight wiring upgrade kit and it's not the highest quality and made in Taiwan, but it'll work...IF it can be made to fit. The wires on the kit are too short for me to run them in any way I liked. I may pull the grille and try again, but if not, I'll have to extend the wiring.

Yeah, it's installed. The original plan was to route it along the top of the core support but as you have summized it's too short to do that. I ran it in front and spans the bottom of the core support. Conceptually, it forms a shallow "V" btwn the headlights. the harness is zip-tied to those one hole on each corner of the radiator opening and under the center grill shell bracket. The relays/power feeds are inserted through one of the holes of the core support forward of the battery and secured with screws to the core. Works as advertised and thank goodness the harness sheathing is black and not yellow as pictured in their catalog.
