If your other gauges are working I would check is the sending unit. It's easy to get to and can be checked with a multimeter.

Well I finally had some time to tend to this issue. First thing noticed was that the ground wire was really bad. Fragile and hanging on by one or two threads of wire. So I made up a new ground wire for it and viola. Now the gauge sweeps but only in the 3/4 tank range. Even when complete full of fuel it doesn't register on the gauge as full. And it only sweeps down to just before 1/2 tank and no further. At this point I'm thinking the fuel sending unit is the culprit. Thoughts?

im betting the float has gone bad and filled with gas. happened to me on more than one old car. pull the sending unit out a little bit and move the lever manually. if your gauge goes up, go ahead and pull the whole thing out and check to see if the float is full of fuel. replacements are available, if you look around.

My truck has an electric fuel pump so I think I would have to do this with the truck running, would it be safe to do?

Does your pump run in the Aux position? My gas gage reads in the ignition Aux position.

set sitch to aux or on... doesnt need to be running. just needs to read.

pull the sender up and give it a shot. if nothing happens, you could start the truck. no different than it running with the gas cap open.

just dont drop anything in your tank with it open, thats a pain to resolve.
