Starter disengages after 2-3 turnovers 1966 F-100 3.9L 4x4

Post by INeedaVacation »

Hi everyone,

I've owned an all original 1966 F-100 3.9L 4x4 for about 5 years now. I was doing some carburetor adjustment (turning the truck off and on a few times inbetween adjustments) and all of the sudden the starter began to disengage after the engine turns over about 2-3 times. I can still hear the starter spinning but its no longer engaged. The starter disengages consistently after the 2 or 3rd turnover. :?

I tried starting the truck while in the granny gear (letting the truck to move forward as it starts) and the starter stays engaged until the truck cranks or I stop turning the key.

My dad told me the solenoid could be sticking because it has been sitting for 3-4 months; and that I should try tapping/hitting the starter with a hammer to free it up.

What do you guys think?! I would really hate to have to replace the starter, it looks nasty down there

The bendix in the starter is wore out, time to replace the starter.
