Hi,
This is probably easy work for some. I very much try NOT to touch or modify wiring and really, really hate dealing with electrical issues. However I now have two that need to be resolved/modified. Any help or how you may have resolved something similar would be very much appreciated.
(quick back story to explain #1 below. New motor, new MSD 8595 ready-to-run ignition. This needs 12v)
#1 - Replace factory pink resistor wire from ignition to the connector where the brown 'S' wire from solenoid is. What I'd like to do is replace the wire at the connectors and run a new non-resistor wire. My question is... HOW. How do I get the connection plug out of the black plastic harness and replace/recrimp. Same for the 'D', according to the wiring schematics that also joins with the brown solenoid wire. This will let me keep a fairly stock appearance and won't be subject to faulty connections and chances of issues.
Do most people just cut the pink wire past the switch connector and then bypass to the brown, also cutting at the 'D' connector ? This leaves a very small length of the existing Pink wire, does this work ?
How did everyone else resolve this issue ?
#2 installation of a tach. There are four wires, red - ignition, white - lights, black - ground and green - coil. The black and green are straight forward. where though should the red and white be tapped into? should the red be tapped into the new 12v ignition source, see above ? and the white, pretty sure it should be the light switch and reviewing the schematics would probably help me here. did I mention how badly I suck at wiring.
I know enough to get myself in trouble and know that especially the hot ignition wire is not something that should be hastily or poorly done. Aside from keeping it from running, I don't want things to die first good bump I go over or burn the truck down. I've seen cars with wiring like that and I really want to shy away from mine being the same if I can help it.
Thanks in advance for your help

Regarding the tach... It is really easy.
If you look at the wiring behind your ignition, you will see a wire that comes to an end with a "plug" that has 3 openings for bullet connectors. At least one of the 3 will be occupied by the power wire that goes to your windshield wiper motor. A 2nd one may be occupied too, but from the factory, at least one was always open and can be used as switched 12v power for an added accessory. This is the perfect spot for your tach. Just put a bullet connector on the end of your red wire and plug it in here. This way, your tach will have power when you start the truck, but will not when the truck is off.
This is the plug you are looking for. You can see it just to the lower left of my fingers and the orange wire I am touching that is plugged into it, that is the power wire I ran for my tach.
As for the white (lights), you can hook it up anywhere in your lighting circuit. Off the top of my head, the wire color for the lighting is light blue with a stripe (possibly red?). Easiest way to check is look at the back of your instrument cluster and look at any of the lights that are not blinkers, etc... Any of the dash lighting will have that color wire. Also, the cigarette lighters usually had a little light above them. The wires for those lights were also the same color. Anyway, just find one of those lighting wires and splice into it with your white wire. That way, when you turn your lights on and activate that circuit, your tach light will come on with the rest of your dash lights.
And here is a picture of the wire color you are looking for. It is the light blue wire with the red stripe right in the middle of the picture that goes to the light socked for my dash lighting.
Your truck may actually have another plug behind your instrument cluster that you can plug right into the circuit like mine did:
But as you can see, I ran multiple aftermarket gauges and hooked all of the lighting for each gauge up to the light blue with red stripe wire for the lighting circuit. This was a temporary hookup though to test it which is why I have a twist on nut on my connection. Do not use one of those, hardwire yours so it cannot come loose or off.
Hopefully all of that help...
You already have the ground and coil wire figured out. Easy stuff.

Re: help with two wiring issues
Thanks for the pics... when I can see them.
I can't access photobucket at work so they're all small squares. Of course this weekend I tore my house apart to do hardwood floors so no internet. when I'm back up and running I'll be able to get a good look at 'em and wire my first Tach !
