My Wiring Mess

Post by 69Ford »

My Idea was to relieve the old switches of to much current draw also put 12 volts to the coil. I eliminated the resister wire and the secondary wire from the solenoid and ran a trigger wire from the ignition switch to a relay for 12 volts to the coil. I have Pertronix Ignition. Eliminated the problem of headlight switch due to much draw of modern headlights with LMC headlight wire harness. Two relays one each high low beam. Also have a relay for the Radio. Ran big enough wire in case I ever want to upgrade from stock radio. Everything works as Ford wanted it to. Headlights are way Brighter Truck runs better than ever.

Looks like a pretty good mess to me. I know to much power running through the switches was a bad design. There is no feeling like driving at night and loosing your headlights. I really like the way the fuse blocks are set up, can I ask what brand they are and were you found them.

Do not remember brand. I bought them on ebay type in 1968 ford truck and they usually come up. The longer one is a powered block of the battery shorter one is just fused links.

Thanks for the lead, I found them. They are made by Arlington.

What type of changes to the under-dash wiring was required for this setup to work? I like the idea behind it. Definitely have room on the inner fenders to support this setup.

Its been a while since I did this. Basically just cut and bypassed the resister wire and the brown wire that bypasses the resister wire and puts 12 Volts to the coil when the key is in the start position. Tapped into the wire on the ignition switch that runs power to the coil As the trigger wire for the relay "Sorry don't remember right know witch one it is" Really not much changing of the under dash wires. I think I made a diagram on another post I'll try and find it and repost. As for the headlight relay's pretty much plug and play with the headlight harness from LMC Truck. You can leave all the original wiring in place in case you want to go back. Just make sure the wires are secured good so you don't have a problem later

I've also had the question why not just run a wire from the ignition switch to the coil since its already 12volts. My theory is these switches are old and also power other things so why not go directly of the battery and not have that load on the old electrical. Also my truck seems to run a lot better with this direct power supply. Draw back if the relay fails and you don't have a spare you will be stranded. I used the same relay on the radio so I have a spare. I may not have a radio but my truck will run.
