Truck sat in the garage for a month while I worked on it. Finally got my disc brake swap done and wanted to take it out for a spin. Tried to start it and all I could hear is the solenoid making a buzzing sound. The battery is 2 months old. I went ahead and put it on the charger over night. Tried it again the next day and the same thing. Replaced the solenoid thinking maybe it took a crap because it looked pretty old. Didn't help. Took the old starter off and took it in to get tested. It passed but sounded bad and smoked a little. Replaced the starter and the wire to it from the solenoid since it didn't look good. Get it all back together and still the same thing. I checked the ground cable that goes from the battery to the block and it looks fine. I put a multimeter on the battery and it was only saying 10.5 Volts. Turned the engine over and watched the voltage and it was between 3 and 6. Charged the battery again today and did a load test on it. It was at the low end of Good but was still registering good. I don't know what to check now.
Here is a video of the old starter. You can hear it spinning but it wasn't engaging making me think the starter was bad.
Do you have a battery in a know vehicle that you know is good? Put it in and try. Have you tried hooking up jumper cables to give it a little boost? 10.5 volts is not enough. You should have a full 12v to the starter. And if it's dropping down to 3-6v, you've either got a bad cell or a bad connection somewhere in the chain. Put a voltmeter on the various connection points and watch for the drop. Battery + to battery -. Battery plus to solenoid. One side of solenoid to the other side. Solenoid to starter, etc. Each time with in "on" position and then in "start" position. Check the before and after and try to narrow down where it's dropping voltage.

Well to my disbelief the 2 month old battery took a crap. Pulled it last night and there was acid under it. Threw the one in from my F150 and truck fired right up. Now I wish I could find the receipt for it.
On the plus side though I got to drive the truck for the first time today around the block. Biggest smile on my face. I was like a kid at Christmas.

There should be a sticker with a serial number on the battery. Return it to the retailer and they should be able to look it up for you.
