Cargo light into a 3rd brake light ...

Post by thin41 »

Has anyone changed the cargo light into a 3rd high brake light ? Where do these wire run to under the dash ?
How would you make the lens red ? or anyone find a red aftermarket lens ?

Any input is welcome. Thanks.

The wiring is easy enough. Just intercept the brake light wire.

To comvert the lense, paint the inside surface with candy red to maintain its translucency.

Actually Coupe5oh has done it to his truck using a color switching LED.

I've started to do it to mine. The only difference is I couldn't get my socket out so I drilled and clearanced the socket for for a 1157 bulb to fit in the socket.

Wiring wise, just add a wire from the switched wire at the brake pedal switch (red/blk if I remember correct). I did it up in the dash harness as it would be hidden there. Ran a spare dome lamp wire as a brake lamp feed. I still have to get the LED, but once it's here you just hook up the cargo lamp wire to the white side and the stop lamp to the red side. The lamp will have to ground out through the mounting screws.

I plan on doing a better write up once I get the LED installed.

I had to change to bulb to try the cargo light 1st - WOW - no way to get fingers on it, but a trick I had remembered is I used the end of a rubber hose smaller than the bulb end. Put pressure on it and it came out - the reverse to install a new bulb.

The cargo did work, but I ran a new wire and tied it into the brakes for the 3rd brake light - I removed the cargo light and found an 11 LED strip on Amazon for 18 bucks - looks awesome and stands out - I like it.

I'm thinking about doing this to my truck. Can you provide a link on Amazon to the LED strip that you used?

i was thinking of just getting a pair of 194 red leds and drilling the holes needed to both sides of the cargo lamp and wiring them to the brake light wires near the switch. leaving a cargo lamp intact and if they are red led's they should work nice. This would use the semi soft rubber 194 sockets, might have to trim the opening in the outside cab wall.

This is something I'm thinking about doing and because i don't have the cargo light option YET. I'm thinking of going a little out of the normal I can get a few of the cargo light assemblies. I'm thinking of using three, two for cargo lighting, and one for third break-light.
