'67 F100 Gas Tank

Post by 67Number263 »

I am in the process of restoring my '67 back to stock and have a new gas tank. I saw the section on gas tanks on this forum but still need an answer to one question. My tank is a behind the seat type. My question is in regards to whether or not the gas tank should be painted body color like the rest of the interior or left unpainted. I have also heard that in '67 only, they were painted black? My truck was repainted years ago (same color as original) and the tank was repainted too (I think). When I removed the tank it was not painted on the backside. It makes sense to me that it would not be painted but I have seen pictures of '68 F-100 with it painted. Does anyone know for sure which way I should go with this? Thanks in advance.

Personally, I would paint if for no other reason than to preserve it. Black or interior color is just a matter of personal preference. If you have a bench seat it won't be seen anyway.

It came with some type of paint on it already and isn't bare metal. But I hear what you're saying and have had that debate with myself.

They used to make a carpet cover for them but nobody remakes them and originals are hard to find.

For what its worth... My buddy bought his 67 truck from the original owners and it had never been painted. The truck was white inside and out, and the tank behind the seat was also white.

My 67 Custom Cab is all original, and the tank is painted the same "pebble beige" as the rest of the truck. But it may not be on the backside.

I thought the carpet cover was just for bucket seat cabs, but maybe not.

I have an early 67. It was built in the first two weeks of production. The truck is rangoon red, but the gas tank was black.

Great - that was one of the observations I have heard previously. What is your vin#. and what factory/city made your truck. My truck is #263 off the line and came from Dallas.

Thanks,

I have an original carpet plus all five trim pieces. What I should do is get an upholstery shop to make up some carpet gas tank covers using my original as a pattern.

My 67 was born in Dallas, TX also, in December 1966 and the tank is Harbor blue just like the rest of the interior. It is original. I had a 1971 that was candy apple red but the tank in it was black.

The tanks were installed before the cabs were painted, that's why the cabs are bare primer behind the tank. Naturally, a service replacement tank would be different color-probably black.

I should also note that, having worked in the automotive industry, if a part or vehicle goes to the repair area, all bets are off. Unless a 100 point restoration is in the cards, nobody will fault you either way you go.
