unknown connector purpose

Post by Craigerf100 »

Any idea what this connector goes to?
Image
It's a 68 so it's not for the proportioning valve brake sensor. It doesn't go to the washer fluid pump.
What else could this go to?

It looks to me like the connector for the "Back-up Lights" switch that was mounted to the column on trucks with "3-on the tree". If it's for the "Back-up" lights the two wires going into the connector should be black with red stripe. Do your back-up lights work without it?

Yeah, it looks like it is part of the reverse lights wiring. On stick shift trucks, that connector is either hooked up to the reverse lights sensor on the transmission or has a jumper that connects those 2 prongs.. I cant really remember how it hooks up. On automatics, the reverse lights are controlled through the Neutral Safety Switch and that particular connector is not used, or maybe that is where it has the jumper.

Anyway, it definitely has to do with your reverse lights and there are a few different ways to use that connector depending on how your truck is set up. So if your reverse lights work, then don't worry about that connector as your truck is set up right. If your reverse lights do not work, then research how to complete that connection based on what transmission your truck is equipped with. :D

Ok cool, years ago my truck was a 3 on the tree. So that makes sense. They do not work. So yes I will be doing some research. Thanks guys for clearing that up.

On column shifts there was a switch and bracket that fastened to the steering column with what looked like a hose clamp. The first/reverse lever came up in reverse to operate the switch. Simple, but it worked.

This has a similar discussion http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... hp?t=32929 and this shows a good photo an original 3OTT switch. http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... =50&t=3019 I had that on my column. It could probably work just as well with an auto column shift.

Awesome thanks sarge. I may just run a switch off of it. Turn it on when I need it. At least until I get a floor shifter.
