Wiring is like plumbing for electricity. A short is like a hole in the pipe and you loose flow(current) and pressure(voltage). A corroded or loose connection is like a clog, flow (current) will decrease and pressure (voltage) will increase up stream side, drop on the downstream side. Either one you and your faucet will only drip (lights will not work).
