Side marker lights always on

Post by mrollings53 »

Okay, I'm lost on this one. My '69's side marker lights are always on. At first I suspected the headlight switch; because the rheostat was shot, and the front parking lamps weren't working. Replaced the headlight switch, and the parking lamps, and rheostat work, but the side marker lights are still always on. According to one diagram the side lights are powered via the same pin as the front and rear parking lights. But, they're off, and the side lights are still on. I've seen another diagram that has the side marker lights, and roof lights powered via a relay. This of course is tucked away inside the passenger side dash/cowl. Did '69 F250's come with the relay if they didn't have the roof lights? Any tips on getting to the relay, and if they even make replacements?

On my 68 the roof and front side markers are wired to work with the headlights. Do you mean yours r only on with the ignition on? Maybe a PO wired them to a hot when Ign is on.

No, they are on all the time; ignition on and off. According to one diagram they are wired to the headlight switch, which has power regardless of the ignition switch. But, I just replaced the switch. The other diagram says that it is powered via a relay that is signaled from the headlight switch. If my truck is wired like the second diagram it would be possible for the relay to fail and send power to the marker lights. If it's wired like the first diagram, then both the new and old headlight switches would have to be defective.
