Is there such a thing ?

Post by wildcard »

I have an 85 F150 that has a 300 I6. It has been abused big time as far as electric goes. I've got most of it working again.
The computer was cut out, a carb added and the entire A/C system removed when the PO had the motor installed. So it's basically the same as my 71 now.
It wasn't running smooth so I set the timing per the Haynes manual. Ran fine after it finally would start but wouldn't idle very well. So, I talked to my mechanic and explained it to him over the phone. He said it was built so the brain / computer had to tell it when to advance the timing. It doesn't have anything to tell it now so it's only running and starting all at the same timing. It never advances going down the road. :? I think I've come around to what he's trying to tell me.
The old points set-up, like in the 71, has the vacuum to advance it. The 85 has nothing. He says there were 2 or 3 years after they came out with elec. ign. where Ford had a distributor on the I6 that had an elec. ign. with a vacuum advance. Does this sound right to anyone ? If so, what year models would that have been ?
I'm gonna give it a try if I can find one. It's either that or go back to a points distributor on it too.
Would there be any reason why it wouldn't work on the 71 also ?

Thanks

FWIW the '85 I6 was carbed from the factory, it was an electronic feedback carb.

Thanks guys. Sorry I haven't answered sooner. Besides the holiday events, I've been trying to get over the flu.
mrollings53, that was a great site for the info I was looking for.

ToughOldFord, that's interesting to know. I was told it came with fuel injection. This engine has been replaced and there's just a plain old carb like my 71.

Yep, I had an '85 F150 with the 300. That electronic carb was junk, so I ended up putting an older pre-electronic carb on it and it ran great. Every two years I'd stick the feedback carb back on so it'd pass smog then as soon as I got home the good carb went back on.
