Instrument cluster voltage regulator

Can anyone tell me the difference between the 1970 and the 1971 regulators ? I bought one for my 70 Crew Cab and it worked for about 2 seconds then nothing. I really need to get my gauges working. I'm thinking either I got the wrong part the first time, there is something else going on to cause the new one to burn up, or I what I got wasn't very well made and fried as soon as my fuel gauge started to read. Any Ideas? Thanks Jeff Something I forgot to mention was there is a piece that attaches to between the icvr and the electrical connection I left this off because I thought it was just to reduce noise to the radio and such. could this be why the new ICVR burnt up.
