Battery Positive Terminal Leakage

Post by Subzero »

I decided to clean my battery of all its corrosion and dirt today while I had some free time. I noticed a slight amount of acid debris on the positive terminal. I took the battery off, used a battery cleaning brush on the terminals. It appears the positive terminal has a slight acid leak right were the terminal connects to the case. A paper towl removed the hardened acid debris along with the brush. Next, I used good old baking soda and water mix and a toothbrush to scrub the top and sides down. While doing so I could see where the solution was reacting around the pos terminal. No cracks were visible and the leak has just oozes around the terminal all this time. After assembly I coated it all really good with dielectric grease. The battery is a Car Quest one. I am unsure of the age too( no sticker). What could be making the battery do this?
Thanks

The case is cracked. In my experience the battery will fail shortly. Most likely because of the soda used to clean the battery.

Some people will tap the battery clamp(s) down with a hammer to make them fit more snug. I used to do it myself. Now I know better, because, even if it doesn't cause visible cracks it can still cause acid to leak around the posts. Sometimes the batteries do fail quickly, but I've also had some that lasted for several years like that. Just "the luck of the draw" I guess. :)

I've never heard of baking soda lightly brushed on as I did ruining a battery, but ya'll were right the battery died today after 8 years of use. I had to jump it and went to go get a new one, good thing I was at home when it did. I ended up getting a glassmat AGM battery from Super Start 775 CCA ( rebadged Deka Intimidater).
