I have two questions so I'll put them in the same post to hopefully make it easier.
My truck is a 1972 F100 Styleside.
#1 - What the heck used to be here? I'm pretty sure this thing never had a second fuel tank, so what would that hole be for?
#2 - Which one of these two hoses sends the hot coolant IN to the heater core. I need to install the valve and I'm not sure which one it goes on, the yellow or the blue arrow hose?
Thanks in advance for any help and clarification!!
I like to use this truck as a reference http://www.fordification.com/70explorer_358miles.htm You can see the hose routing in one if the pics. That hole in the dash does not look original but that be about where the manual choke knob would be.

My truck was originally a 3 speed manual, but had since been converted to automatic. Anyone know if it would have come with a choke? I'd like to put whatever control that belongs there back in place, even if it's attached to nothing.
"Does anyone know if it matters which hose the valve is actually on?"
When I changed the heater core in my '72, I forgot which goes where, got them reversed. It seems a little hot coolant got into the core even with the (new) valve off. Switched the hoses at the core, no more constant heat.
So, yes it might matter, an easy fix if you get constant heat with the valve off.
For that blank hole, maybe a manual choke or a cargo light switch?

Man, I was hoping you wouldn't ask that!
I don't remember...I sold the FE 360 years ago.
In the photos, looks like the FE V8's had the valve on the hose connected to the fitting on the intake.
My six cyl has it on the hose to the water pump, seems to cool down when valve is closed.
