Resister Wire Burned I Think

Post by 69Ford »

I was under my dash a noticed a wire with a plastic covering burned pretty good. The truck still seems to run fine wire gets warm to touch when running. Is this the resister wire, Can it be
replaced, Splice another in place. Here is a pic if it helps.

Resistor wires should be pink or violet color (hard to tell in the pic). Any idea where it goes to/comes from?

I labeled the resistor wire in your picture. It's the one that splices in with the brown wire at that connector. Follow the burnt wire to were it goes at both ends to figure out what it does.

All right thanks I'm going out to the truck right know to find out what this burned wire is. It helps a lot to know it isn't the resister wire. I'll post more pics and let you know what I find. Also
do I need a special program to edit in arrows on my pictures to better explain what I'm talking about.

Spoke too soon it is the resister wire just did a loop under some wiring harness tape. Looked at the truck and went to the wiring diagram. Its the Pink wire from the coil wiring harness to the
ignition switch. Has anybody dealt with this can I bypass this wire, by bypassing send to much current to the coil. I also changed over to pertronix electronic ignition the cheaper first generation one. Would have this caused it. Don't know what to do with out causing more problems. The wire is not broke but exposed in many places. Here's another Pic. Thanks In advance
for any info.

If you've got the pertronix you can just splice in a new 12-14 gauge wire; no resistor needed. You don't need to worry about hooking that brown wire up either, because the coil will be getting 12V from the ignition switch. The pertronix might have fried the resistor wire depending on how you wired the module. The module needs a full 12v according to the instructions. There could have been extra current draw if you just hooked the module up to the positive terminal on the coil.

On my truck I ran a new 14 GA wire from the ignition switch straight to the coil. I also replaced my switch with one for a '70 and up truck, because the newer style switch uses 1/4" spade terminals. It's a lot easier to rewire than the bullet terminals that come on the older switches. They still make the connector pigtail for the newer switch too; for cleaner wiring.

And, I just use Microsoft Paint for adding text and arrows to pictures.

Wow thanks for the help. Just came in from the garage. I ran a temporary coil wire from my ignition switch I was thrown by the red green stripe wire coming from the same terminal
as the pink resister wire. Studied the wire diagram for long time. Finally cut the resister wire out and taped into the red green striped wire with a for know temporary coil wire hooked
it up to the coil. Started the truck and so far so good. Runs awesome. Tomaro I will work on making new harness to make this permanent. Thank for all the help.
