The starter and fuse box shouldn't have anything to do with each other. It sounds like a faulty starter solenoid or ignition switch. Be sure that the solenoid is wired correctly. The little post closest to the positive battery terminal is connected to the ignition switch start terminal, and the one next to the starter terminal is spliced in with the coil wire from the ignition switch AFTER the resistor. Here's a picture for you.

in this particular setup, almost everything goes through the fuse box. I know how the selanoid gets hooked up. thanks for the picture though. so what I did was unplug/unhook everything. bypassed the fuse box and tested everything separately. all the electronics tested correctly. rebuilt started was also good to go. so, it was time to start, try to, it again. it cranked, tried to fire, same results. so, I moved the distributor yet again. sputtered. ok, what does it need. spark, got it. fuel, got it. air, got it. then I looked at the carb again. I had done a rebuild, and based on my '68 (same engines) the idle screws were about the same. the '68 has manual choke, '72 has electric, so I adjusted that again. then I looked at the throttle, and the screw near where it connects was completely different. screwed it in, and bam! comedy of previous owners errors, well, "fixed", now for fine tuning. it figures, some things that get overlooked might be the problem, although I had many....
thanks everyone!
