halogen taillights?

Post by dotcentral »

Just got my 71 running again after another engine swap. I plan on using it as my daily driver once I get a few bugs worked out. With the way people drive around here, texting, weaving in and out of lanes, etc. I don't need some idiot rear ending me because he couldn't see me. I am thinking about adding a third brake light, up high where the cargo light would have been, or maybe those LED strings that run between the tailgate and the bumper. While I am deciding, I want something that will shine bright in the existing tail/brake lights without melting something.

I bought a set of what the doofus at Autozone said were halogen bulbs, Sylvania 1157 ST. Now that I got them home, I see they have a blue color to the bulb. Not so sure a blue bulb will do well in a red tail light housing. There are some little pictograph diagrams on the back of the Sylvania 1157 ST packaging, showing not to touch with bare hands, might be also saying it burns hot, hard to tell. Front side of package claims up to 40% brighter, 20% more depth to light field, 25% wider light field. Think I'll take return these.

I have tried the LED replacement bulbs that were replacements for the 1157 bulbs about 6-7 years ago. To me those look dimmer than standard 1157 bulbs, unless you in the one perfectly straight on spot - which doesn't happen too often in the real word. I know LMC has a replacement LED panel, but too pricey for me. Recently found these: http://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo ... ower-/814/ They have good reviews, so think I will give them a try. I will have to submit what I find.

I've been told that the halogen bulbs, work lights and such, will explode when subjected to the natural oils in your fingertips. I never took the chance and always handled them with a shop towel. The LED bulbs do require a full 12v to operate correctly and I've some that have the little LED bulbs sticking out at an angle around the outside for that "line of sight" issue. Good hunting and let us know how it comes out.

One thing I thought of (but never did yet).
Is to get earlier tail lens from '65-66? with out the back up light. (all red)
Then rewire my stock back up lights into extra brake lights for added brightness.
I think they still make a halogen 1156 bulb to be even brighter.

I have thought of that as well.

I just found these in the new NPD catalog: http://www.npdlink.com/store/products/l ... 50759.html

Anyone try these yet?
