Rewiring Cost

Howdy, Anyone have a ballpark estimate on how much I could expect to pay for a complete rewiring of my 72 F100 from an auto electric shop? I have a few bugs (no reverse lights, etc) that would probably be a lot less of a headach to fix if I just had it all redone. It's the original wiring, so probably is not a bad idea. Many thanks!

A full rewire job with factory color coded wires can get pretty costly. With the info on this site, you should be able to do a repair yourself. If you have a three speed manual transmission, there is a "back-up light" switch on the steering column under the hood that tends to break or disappear. If you don't care about cost, I would estimate a good shop will charge at least $45 /hour, and it can take several hours to find and replace a wire, and they probably won't just patch in a repair, they will replace it from connector to connector. If you want to give it a stab, you have some mighty fine help available here at Fordification. Just attack it one problem at a time, or post each problems on seperate posts, and work them all. If you're looking at a complete rewire, there are universal kits that you can get to replace your wiring. Most of them come at different levels, from basic keep-it-on-the-road to all-out heavy-duty stuff for auxilliary accessories. I've never thought about being that in-depth with my wiring (although I do have an occasional gremlin myself), but you should be able to find some info on the forum if you do a search.

Painless makes a harness specifically for 67-77 Ford trucks. Right now it's $550 without switches and $730 with switches on Summit.

EZ Wiring's 21 circuit bumper to bumper is $185 and a real sweet harness. http://www.ezwiring.com/wiring_harness.html Got mine the other day (from a member at a discounted price) and each wire has it's location written right on the wire from end to end like "right rear parking light" or "ignition start" and "ignition run". Only kicker is you have to terminate the ends of the wire into your connectors or use new ones. I'd give it a skill level of about 6-7 on a 1 to 10 scale.

i heard painless isn't nothing special, i have heard good things about rebel and like the link above they are much cheaper.
