72 f100 electrical issue(s) after new alternator

Post by dhamm72 »

My alternator went out the other day, as a result of jumper cables getting momentarily put on the wrong posts in the dark. Stupid mistake I know. I immediately removed the cables and put them on the correct way and it charged up fine. I got a few miles down the road and heard popping underneath my car and began to lose power. My wife who was driving behind me told me she saw sparks shooting from the rear axle. I ended up getting it towed to a local shop after a new battery didn't fix the issue. The diodes on my alternator were fried, so I had them order a 100amp single-wire from jegs to put in it. On the way home from the shop everything was running good, except my cigarette lighter and radio had no power. I checked the drivers side main fuse box and all the fuses looked decently old so I decided to replace them all. After replacing the fuses the problem got worse instead of better. Now the following things are getting no power, turn signals, heater, radio and cigarette lighter. Everything else seems to be working fine. This is my daily driver so I'm wondering what other things could it possibly be? I've checked the connections on the new alternator to make sure they're tight and I changed a couple inline blade-type fuses in the wiring to the radio. still nothing. Any help is greatly appreciated. I've attached a photo of the type of alternator that was installed. the radio is aftermarket.

Anything that was switched on when you reversed the jumper cables could be fried. As a start to your problem you could hook the radio straight to the battery & see if it works. Hook the heater blower motor straight to power to see if it works & so forth. Check & make sure your signal light harness isn't shorted out back where your wife saw the sparks flying.

Update: It ended up being two lose fuse-connections, so I bypassed the fuse box and put inline fuses in the two items that had lose connections, the fuse on the back of the radio itself ended up being blown and the fuse in the plug for my gps was blown. So painful mistake, but all is working now.
