I am trying to clean up the wiring in my 69 F350, it has an factory aux. gas tank and the wiring has been messed with. There is an aftermarket switch on the dash wired to a circuit breaker/solenoid looking thing mounted on the inner fender close to the starting solenoid, it looks factory and it looks similar to a horn relay. One of the posts is wired to the Pos. side of starter solenoid, the other goes to the switch in the cab. The other side of the switch runs down to the gas tank.
Would this switch be for the fuel gauge? There would be no other reason to run power to the aux tank, right?
Is this relay/circuit breaker stock? I don't see anything like it on the schematics, even for the aux. gas tank.
I dont use the aux. tank so I am going to get rid of all the wires and clutter. Maybe come back later and wire it up to the stock switch and harness.
Thanks, Ron

Re: relay.circuit breaker near strtr soleniond, 69 F350
After searching this site for awhile I have come to the conclusion that it is the horn relay on the inner fender. The PO must have been using it for the aux. gas tank. That explains why my horn wont honk! The wire coming off the horn runs into the wiring harness, so I am going to have to delve deeper into the wiring and find where my horn wires went.
So in conclusion to my previous post, Nevermind.
Thanks!

From your description it sounds like the PO had robbed the horn relay power for an electric tank selector switch. I always wanted an electric one, (rather than almost running off the road to reach down beside the seat and switch it over once the truck starts sputtering-running out of gas)!

No, the current owner is just a meat head!
I found the horn relay between the battery and starter solenoid. The reason my horn isn't working is because one of the brushes that are inside the horn ring is broken.
The relay that I was looking at earlier was used to power a couple of switches, I am guessing they were for the aux. tank gauge, the wires run down to the tank. There was a total of 3 switches that ran off the relay, one of them ran back to the end of the truck for something, maybe a work light, the end was cut off.
There is also a harness near the original tank switch that has been cut. That might be the original harness for the tank. I will have to get rid of all the mess under there first before I try to put things back the way they are supposed to be.
I don't like doing wiring cuz there is no room to work under the dash, but it feels good when I actually figure something out.
