Carefully take the cutting torch...naw just kidding! Typically you loosen the nut on the top of the mast and the antenna will lower into the hole. It then has two "fingers" that will pivot/swivel and pull out of the hole upward.
Hint: tie a piece of twine onto the end of the cable nearest the radio and pull the one end of this out with the antenna cable, (leaving the other end around where the radio would be). Then use the string to pull the cable back to the radio as you put the new antenna in.

I hope this works! I'm rebuilding my carb (and rebuilding my choke stove lines... and replacing my exhaust), so admittedly, the antenna mast is taking a backseat. But I have a rectangular box that's attached to the quarter panel - maybe 2"x1". I don't remember seeing a nut, but who knows!? These engineers like to hide stuff all the time!
The rectangular base typically has a large chrome plated nut that "sandwiches" the assembly on the top side. Once you loosen this nut it allows the bottom "jaw" to swivel and pull out through the top of the fender.
